Uber AI Residency

Uber AI Labs has now announced an intensive one-year research training program that is to begin this summer: Here we have The Uber AI Residency.

Uber, as we know has substantially invested in machine learning and artificial intelligence, with groups around the company working on a variety of techniques such as Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, and Natural Language Processing(NPL), to name just a few in order to enable a set of real-world applications that vary just as much. When they go well with machine learning, Uber can provide improved user experiences across all their services.

Among other applications that it has, there can be an application of these technologies to develop:

  • Across a city, better prediction of spatiotemporal rider demand patterns enables both shorter wait times for riders as well as shorter gaps between trips for driver-partners, that in result leads to higher average hourly earnings.

  • Models that enable more intelligent fusion of mapping, traffic, and GPS data facilitate more efficient route selection and more precise pick-up and drop-off locations, that lead to smoother, and better trips.

  • Understanding of Natural language, permitting faster perception and resolution of customer support tickets, for example, enabling a rider to recover the backpack that they left behind on a trip more quickly.

  • At the scale of Uber, these advances or those in directions yet to be explored have the potential to positively impact millions of people across.

  • Over the last decade, Machine learning has grown by leaps and bounds, vaulting from academic curio to a real-world workhorse powering a vast number of business applications. However, there still remains important parts of science and engineering that are yet to be done. Taking inspiration from similar programs, Uber AI Labs created the Uber AI Residency to allow up-and-coming researchers accelerate their careers in machine learning and AI research and practice.

Now, What will take place here?

All the Residents in research and application will be provided with the flexibility of being able to pursue a range of different directions. Some projects pushing the frontiers of the field might also be involved with fundamental AI research, and developing new algorithms for learning and control, while others might include devising and training new models in order to help transport people more efficiently and things in the physical domain, hence, overall improving real-world user experiences.

Still, other projects might in order to enable understanding of societal conditions make the use of new or existing models in concert with anonymized data sets. The residents directly with both researchers and engineers who work at Uber AI Labs and also with those across the entire company will have the opportunity to work along so that they can effectively accomplish research goals drawn from this diverse set of possibilities.

For how long will it last and what all does it hold?

  • The Uber AI Residency will last for a period of 12 months, starting off with an initial period of learning, exploration, and collaborative ideation.

  • During this period, in order to converge on initial project directions, residents will meet with researchers at AI Labs as well as product and engineering teams.

  • Residents, to support them throughout their fellowship will be paired with mentors from Uber AI Labs, as well as relevant research teams. Also, they encourage pursuing projects that span disciplines and teams.

  • Residents via blog posts, or by publishing open source projects will be also be encouraged to publish their work externally at top machine learning venues (NIPS, ICLR, ICML, CVPR, EMNLP, ACL, etc.).

Now, Who can Apply and by when?

All the residents will be directly embedded with Uber AI Labs at their headquarters in San Francisco, and candidates that come from all academic and geographic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Adding on, applicants who require a work visa, on a case-by-case basis only for those who are accepted will be assessed.

If all of this sounds like fun to you, Apply by the 18th of March, 2018 to the link mentioned below.
